Kidney pain

The kidneys lie under the lower ribs on both sides. Pain coming from the kidneys can cause an ache in these areas. Sometimes the pain can be severe, and it may move down into the groin. Usually, the pain is on one side only.

There are lots of causes of pain coming from the kidneys, and some of these are listed below:

  • kidney stones
  • blockage of the ureter tubes which drain the kidneys
  • PUJ obstruction
  • kidney infections (pyelonephritis)
  • kidney inflammation

 

 

Commonly, people get pains in the kidney area which is caused by other things. It may be that the pain is not coming from the kidneys at all. Non-kidney causes of loin pain include:

  • back problems
  • muscular sprains
  • trapped nerves
  • chest infection or other lung problems
  • gallstones
  • bowel problems
