BPH does not always require any treatment. Some men have an enlarged prostate but it doesn't necessarily cause any bother. You may decide with your specialist just to keep an eye on things at first.

A prostate operation may be necessary for some patients. The main reasons for doing an operation are:

  • failure to get better with tablets
  • progression of symptoms
  • kidney problems due to BPH
  • bladder stones
